Why a Bathroom with Underfloor Heating Still Needs a Towel Radiator

In homes with underfloor heating, a separate towel radiator may be omitted because the floor is expected to heat the bathroom. Yet a warm bathroom does not mean used towels and bathrobes will dry quickly. An electric towel radiator provides a place to dry towels, bathrobes and washed garments suitable for this type of drying, even when you do not need extra room heating.

By helping towels and bathrobes dry, it reduces the time they remain damp. This helps reduce the moist conditions that encourage mould, other fungi and bacteria to grow. Used alongside regular washing and bathroom ventilation, it supports a more hygienic drying routine.

Choose the Right Heating Power for Your Bathroom

Start by deciding what you want the towel radiator to do. Heating the whole bathroom may require a different power rating from drying towels in an already warm room. A model used as the main heater must have enough capacity to compensate for the bathroom’s heat loss.

Models with No Visible Cable After Installation

Radiva also offers models with no visible external cable. A professional electrician connects a pre-installed cable emerging from the wall to the connection compartment inside the product. Once installed, the connection is concealed and no cable is visible outside. The wall cable outlet must be positioned in advance according to the selected model’s technical drawing.

The Electric Heating Unit Must Always Be at the Bottom

Important use warning: Radiva electric towel radiators must be installed and used with the electric heating unit at the bottom. Do not use the product horizontally or upside down. Damage caused by these positions is not covered by the warranty. Please follow the installation and operating instructions.

The installation position and electrical connection must be suitable for the bathroom and comply with the product manual. Ask your electrician to check the required protection and earthing where applicable. If the cable is too short, arrange a suitable connection point instead of using an extension lead.

Measure the Space Before You Buy

  1. Measure the available wall width and height, allowing for doors, cupboards and space to hang towels.
  2. Compare your measurements with the technical drawing. Check the total height including the heating unit, the projection from the wall and the fixing positions.
  3. For a plug-in model, check the cable can reach the socket. For a concealed-cable model, check the wall cable outlet matches the product’s requirements.

Do Pipe Centres Matter for an Electric Towel Radiator?

Pipe centres, shown as AKS in Turkish specifications, are the distance between the centres of the flow and return connections on a hydronic system. A standalone electric towel radiator does not need to match this distance. Existing wall fixing holes must still be checked against the new product.

If a hydronic towel radiator is removed, a plumbing professional must safely decommission the old pipework. Pipe centres remain important for dual-fuel models designed to use both the water circuit and electricity.

How Much Electricity Does an Electric Towel Radiator Use?

Electricity consumption depends on the appliance’s electrical power and how long the heating element operates. Watts indicate power at a given moment; the kWh shown on your bill measure the electrical energy used over time.

Consumption calculation: Power (W) ÷ 1,000 × time heating at full power (hours) = consumption (kWh).

A 300 watt appliance, equivalent to 0.3 kilowatts, heating continuously at full power for two hours consumes 0.6 kilowatt hours.

This calculation assumes the heating element runs continuously at full power for the stated time. A thermostatic model may stop and restart heating once the target temperature is reached. The time the appliance is switched on may therefore differ from the total time the element actively heats. Actual consumption varies with usage conditions.

Estimate the Effect on Your Electricity Bill

For an approximate cost, multiply the kWh used by the applicable unit rate in your electricity tariff. For example, a 300 W appliance heating at full power for a total of 2 hours each day uses approximately 18 kWh over 30 days. This assumes continuous heating during the stated periods; use metered or suitably measured consumption for your actual usage.

Choose Settings to Suit Your Daily Routine

Run the towel radiator for as long as you need it. If your chosen model has a timer or programming function, set it around your bathroom routine. A suitable temperature setting and sufficient capacity help you manage comfort and consumption together.

A lower wattage does not always mean lower total consumption. An undersized product may run for a long time without warming the bathroom to your preferred temperature. The right choice considers both the power needed by the room and the operating time.

Hang towels as directed in the product instructions and do not cover the control unit. Ventilate the bathroom to remove the moisture released during drying. A towel radiator does not replace ventilation.
